Improving Bat Conservation Measures - Executive Summary

Commissioned by Natural England, this project brought together 35 stakeholders interested in or affected by bat conservation measures at two online workshops in February and March 2022. Participants came from regulators, local planning authorities, custodians of historic buildings, bat and nature conservation, universities, and local bat conservation volunteers.

The purpose of this work was to identify ways to improve the regulatory system to maximise conservation benefits for bats. Proposed solutions supported by a wide range of stakeholders will be taken forward for more in-depth consideration.

Participants approached this work from different perspectives, with some recognising and keen for significant change and others focused on incremental improvements to existing measures. The process design therefore enabled exploration of the current context, considered a range of conservation measures and potential improvements, and explored the pros and cons of significant change and what that might entail.

The workshops were designed, facilitated, and reported on by Dialogue Matters.
